Luis Figo is the latest name to be linked with a move to White Hart Lane. In a story that is hugely reminiscent of the Rivaldo fiasco, or even the Davids transfer saga, Figo (or at least someone he met in an Italian restaurant) has come out and reliably informed us that:
"Luis has always had a soft spot for Spurs and would love to live in London. He has seen other stars go to the capital and settle with their families."
Now correct me if I'm wrong, but there are a couple of elements to this quote that don't sit right with me. This comment seems to be more about the Portuguese legend moving to London than it does about wanting to play for Spurs.
The way I see it, Figo wants to move to London, knows Chelsea and Arsenal won't touch him, and so figures that Spurs are his best option. If he had such a "soft spot" for us, why didn't he come here a couple of years ago when he left Madrid?
Having said all that, I don't think it would be such a bad thing so long as he slots into the wage structure, and doesn't whinge about needing first team football every week. He can play on the left or the right and pace has never really been a part of his game so even at 34 I think he would have something to offer us for next season. Plenty of European experience being just one of them.
