THE DOS SANTOS RIDDLE

After another sparkling display in last night's victory over Benfica, I have been wondering what the agenda is with Gio Dos Santos.

Clearly every Spurs fan you speak to has pretty much loved him from day 1 and would be delighted for us to keep him. Most would even welcome the lad being given his chance in the squad proper, so why are we still hearing stories about swap deals, loans and sales?

Harry hasn't exactly got Rafa Benitez's 'eye for a player' so he must be able to see what we see. Gio is pacey, has quick feet, gets into space brilliantly, has good vision and can finish - I've even seen him chasing back and putting in solid tackles recently! Yet Harry seems incapable of publically backing the lad., all we hear is the "must knuckle down" sort of comments.

The thing is, Gio was the young player of the tournament at the World Cup, impressed me in his second half cameo against Villarreal and worked his socks off last night. What more does he have to do? We clearly have a need for a tricky second striker/in-the-hole type player and if Dos Santos is good enough for AC Milan (alledgedly) then he must be able to do a job for us.

I'm now wondering if this is just the legendary Redknapp man-management in action. It seems like insanity to give up a young player with this kind of genuine potential just because he likes a party or two. I can only assume that Harry knows what works with the player, and in his case the stick is more effective than the carrot. Time to give him his chance now though don't you think?

We can't seriously be about to sell him can we? If Keane goes he's a ready made replacement, a seat on the bench every week as one of the 4 strikers would be seen as apromotion for the player, so I expect he'd be happy. A perfect impact player when we need to beat the team bus against Blackpool?

I for one would be delighted for him.

I like him!! i think he can be a big big player for us in the future if Harry can get him sorted!! could see him progressing this year like Bale did last year

As long as he keeps improving his performances as he has been, and tries to control the clubbing then I'm sure he will prosper at Tottenham.

Foggy.

We don't know how much partying and how disrepectful Gio was last season so i am not too surprised that Harry has not come out heaping praise on him.

If he continues to impress on and off the pitch 'Arry will publicly praise him.

Yes he is a young player who might be worth keeping, but if he is not quite what we seek then in the Jan window let him go.

lets be honest we love him but to say he is the young player of the world cup is very far fetched! Ozil was the man of the tournemant amongst the youngens but lets hope gio can continue to progress!

do any of ye know anything about football outside of england, this lad is genuinely one of the best young footballers on the planet and has been for the last few years, compared to young english players with inflated price tags dos santos is different class, wake up harry and give him a chance in a big match, he tore france and south africa apart with his pace, shooting power and guile, im a spurs fan all my life and this kid is a rare commodity in football a pacey left footer . we would be foolish to let him go.p.s if jack rodwell is worth 30 million and has done nothing in his career how much is gio worth a player who is the star of an international team way ahead of u donkeys in england .wake up over there please and dont swap him for a provin failure like huntellar. we should also break the bank for luis suarez.

harry has got the best out of 90% of our lads and we have to trust he knows what he's doing with the lad, i predict a decent season from him.

Graham i have always admired Dos Santos and expect him to do very well given he applies himself, but to say he is worth anywhere near 30mil at this stage is absolutely ridiculous. He could be one of the best young players but definitely isn't given his CLUB performances for the last few seasons. However the fact that it is now clear he has to play as a second striker to be at the top of his game is very encouraging and i'm not alone in my opinion that he is the natural replacement for the departing Keane. COYS

I couldn't agree more. I say in my blog many times how much I rate Gio, I think I may have a man crush.

I've spoke recently of how i think this pre season has been used as a bit of a advertising campaign for Gio. Lets hope that the situation gets fliped on its head and it advertises the fact to Arry that Gio is a real contender for a run of games in the first squad.

i like what your saying coys, when i said 30 million i meant that rodwell is not worth anything like that ,i wouldnt pay 2 million for him,gio is far better than him ,what im tryin to say is english players are overrated look at that relay runner at the emirates wallcott they think in the english press that he,s good he cant shoot, cross, dribble ,pass or header the ball how is he a footballer? if gio was english there would be murder in the press over there to get him in the team. christ almighty boys the lad is quality. the sooner u english get oof your high horse and start relising that our beloved spurs play in a mickey mouse league where only a handful and i mean a handful of english players can even trap a ball the better, the only reason the league is anywhere near watchable is because of the top quality europeans and south americans that play in it .

gio feels like a new signing i know its only pre-season but its a start hell be confident after a good world cup if he knuckles down we have a hell of a player on our hands and he allready said he wants to prove his worth at spurs

well said alex, the sooner we bring in more non english players the better.who would pay 30 million for james milner? the same money suarez would cost ? cmon boys

Keep hold of Gio, get rid of RK and bring in LS OR KJH, and a quality central defender....job done

I agree with Robbo. I too reckon he could be this seasons Bale. I think it would be madness to sell him now. Give him more playing time & he will
keep improving.

graham - you are an idiot. Ok, lets get rid of all our "useless" english/british players shall we? King, Dawson, Huddlestone, Bale, Lennon, Bentley, Defoe, Crouch... and replace them with Luis Suarez, who has scored loads of goals in the mighty Dutch league. Much like that "proven failure" Klaas Jan Huntelaar. Only difference is KJH has actually shown he can also score goals in La Liga and Serie A (at roughly 1 goal every 150 minutes in both).

Maybe you should stick to watching football in your own country if you have such a problem with the English.

Harry has no problem with him as a person, only problem is Gio not turning up to training and keeps going out on the lash!! Gio needs to sort himself out and then he will be given his chance, his future is in his own hands!

Don't get me wrong, i like Dos Santos but just hope he can live up to his international reputation at club level. He went on loan at Galatasaray last season and hardly set the world alight? 18 games and zero goals! and that was after being named player of the tournament for mexico at the CONCACAF gold cup in 2009! Hopefully he will get his head down and start turning out some of those performances at club level!

I have some business contacts in Mexico and they all love Gio, but they all nod and wink and tell me how he likes to party. He also has a superstar WAG in tow, so he is effectively the "Beckham of Mexico". Having said that, with a little application, I think he can convince Harry to give him a chance.

anonymous ud want to be bigger than me and im 6 foot 4 and 16 stone u fuckin prick to call me an idiot, if ud had read properly ud have seen i said a handful of english players were good it just so happens they all play for spurs, now apoligise gimp?

Its the last chance saloon for Gio. needs to stop falling over on & off the pitch. To get in the top 4 this season will be more difficult than last season & Harry cannot take too many risks in the Premier League with young suspect players but he could get an oppertunity in the cups & then take it fron there. The league is about consistancy & to finish in Top 4 again we will need that. Good Luck Spurs!

Right, where do I start, 6'4 & 17 stone, well thats laughable! Try being 6'7 & 19 stone & feet big enough to kick peoples arses all over the place. Cant say I hate it, as for Gio, top player, want him to stay and prove himself next season

where is Gudjonsen??? ..i wannt him back :)

Thomas Müller was the young player of the tournament.. Neither Özil nor GDS...

There was only one thing that was a worry about Gio it was not is drinking . The problem was is Ankle, we bought him on the cheap because he had a big operation like Bale and Barcelona put a clause on is sale if we sold him in the next two years they would get 4 million more .This has now passed and could be our luck he was not sold last year. Harry is after Bellamy and a few others and he will offer any of our fringe players to get the three players he needs even if our kids look great.

I think we should forget about signing Luis Suarez now guys; he's cup-tied for the Champions League having played for Ajax in the qualifying rounds

Why are even considering to sell one of our undoubted young talents? All this talk of dipping into the transfer market when we have talent already in the ranks. I accept that we do need to strengthen the defence what happened to Simon Kjaer? Also read our chief scout was running the rule over Wigans Figora and or N'zogbia. Fact is Gio Dos Santos is a mouthwatering talent he showed this at the world cup in South Africa and again against Villerreal he has to have place in the squad otherwise the likes of old red nose will come sniffing around surprised he hasn't already. I think maybe its time Robbie was sold (shame because if we could keep him I would) but not to villa one of our rivals and maybe get shot of BAE. Lillywhitetilidie
