Cahill: A Great Bit Of Business?

Now that bruising hoofmeister silky ball player Gary Cahill has a couple of Eng-er-land caps to his name, those elements of the media we adore so much (namely those who can't bear to see a player at a club "beneath" him) have come to the logical conclusion that he'll be moving on.

However, unlike other notable transfer sagas of late, this time the player seems to have had a giant "For Sale" sign stapled to his imposing forehead, by none other than his own manager. Owen Coyle is said to be resigned to losing the player and, as a smart man, would undoubtedly prefer a player plus cash deal rather than 20 million big ones stowed safely in the box marked "Petty Cash" (at least according to people in the press/on the internet that make this stuff up that is anyway).

So, what with Spurs currently having more defenders that a 1980's video game arcade, what kind of deal would we propose (because it's easy, all this making-up-transfers business). I guess it's obvious though - Bassong and/or Hutton (unless they want Bongani Khumalo who, at 24, is plying his trade at Preston North End these days - make of that what you will). Anyway, one has to assume they'd be looking for proven Premiership quality experienced Premiership players so we'll stick with these 2. Bassong, Hutton and £6m seems like a reasonable deal to me.

I have to say that I think this would be a cracking bit of business. Gallas only has another year of expecting to be first choice, King could collapse in a heap at any given moment and although I do like Kaboul, I think he's probably a better right back and/or squad player. Dawson and Cahill at the heart of the defence for the next 5 years - yes bloody please. You never know, we might actually score more goals from corners too.

Defensive duties split between:

RB: Corluka, Walker, Kaboul
CB: King, Dawson, Gallas, Cahill, Kaboul
LB: Benny, erm... Bale? Rose?

Oh, maybe we need a 'proper' LB too?

Do you know anything about football or did you actually watch Spurs at all, last season? If so, and if you say you're a 'Season Ticket Holder' then maybe try something else as a hobby, eh?

Kaboul was awesome the times he deputised at centre-back and the only reason he wasn't able to build on his good work was due to injury

Whilst I agree that Bolton wouldn't plump for him, the view on Khumalo is a little blinkered as well. He came from an inferior league and from a different country and will need time to acclimatise. Yes, he may not make that step up - but scouts spot 'potential' as well as current ability.

I expect Kyle Walker to take the right back spot from Corluka permanently. I also see Kaboul making the step up and partner with Dawson much more over the season. Gallas I doubt will last an entire season. The same can be said of Ledley King.

All Spurs have to do now is purge those who realistically will struggle to get matches: Keane, Bentley, Dos Santos, Hutton, Bassong, and Palacios. Use the monies from these transfers - whatever the amount - and go after two or three players who will improve the team.

If it is feasible for us to get Eto'o then we should do what we can to make that happen. We should also step up our interest in Scott Parker and get in a solid defender. Cahill is too similar to Dawson. We need a dynamic defender like Sandro but a centre-back. Parker will complement Sandro or Huddlestone, whoever he partners. This would allow Modric to be pushed further forward or permit him to have a floating role across the midfield. In a 4-2-3-1-1 formation we could be devastating.

@ Enorme Nuez.

You clearly are the brains. Play without a keeper - why didn't anyone else think of that?

I'm sure it would be with an extra player on the pitch....or are you suggesting we play without a keeper?

@DBs Knees

At what point did I say Kaboul was shit? Yes he's ok at CB, that doesn't stop me thinking he's better at RB. Hence why he's on the list for both those positions you plum.

You think he'd be first choice should Daws, King and Gallas all be fit do you?

I also assume that should Khumalo doesn't make the step up, as you concede may be the case, that my views will no longer be blinkered, yet proclaimed by yourself as incredibly insightful???

Great article, right up my street and agree about Cahill, would be clever bit of biz - getting rid of 2 bits of dead woods in Hutton and Bassong would also be good biz for both parties

maybe he could replace dawson and we'd stop conceding goals. Ol dawson is teflon man. Whilst everyone else carries the can he makes mistake after mistake which goes unheaded. very very overrated player. i'd stick my neck out and say when king retires so will dawson. that's the onlt time dawson has a decent game..alongside king..who carries him all day. yes walker over kaboul but ol Harry doesn't like kids..look out for some old fart signings that will send modders et al off to new pastures

Anybody who thinks Kaboul is shit needs to remove their head from out of their posterior...Kaboul is TIGHT, and I mean at either CB or RB but I agree with the other posters that CB is where he'll play now that Gallas is taking a "backseat" role and Ledders only playing sporadically and assuming Marseille or some other French Ligue 1 team don't come in for him.

Having said that, I also agree that Cahill is too similar to Dawson in playing style (so is Phil Jones for that matter...). I think what we need is a Samba, Hummels or a Tasci to balance the CBs.
